Equine Herpes Virus Update
Date: Tuesday, April 10, 2012
An update from the CDFA on EHV-1 for April 7, 2012: The Los Angeles County horse confirmed positive for the non-neuropathogenic strain of EHV-1 was euthanized due to severe laminitis. Also, on March 30 (but just reported), a horse in Santa Barbara County became acutely ataxic in all four limbs and recumbent in her stall. Unresponsive to therapy, the horse was euthanized. Necropsy results confirmed equine herpes myeloencephalopathy, the neurological form of EHV-1. Sorry to bring bad news. This ongoing series of cases serves as a reminder that diseases threaten our horses every day. When available, vaccines remain the best way to protect your horse's health.
Thanks,
Gary
